   Jean Grey, empowered by the cosmic Phoenix Force, becomes one of the most powerful beings in the universe. At first she is benevolent, but her power grows beyond her ability to control. The villain Mastermind (Jason Wyngarde) uses psychic illusions to corrupt Jean, convincing her she is his “Black Queen” within the Hellfire Club. This psychological assault fractures her identity and pushes the Phoenix toward darkness. Jean’s mind finally snaps under the manipulation. The Phoenix Force becomes Dark Phoenix, a cosmic entity with no restraint. In one of the most infamous moments in Marvel history, Dark Phoenix consumes a star, destroying an entire solar system. The alien Shi’ar Empire, led by Empress Lilandra, declares Jean too dangerous to live. The X‑Men are forced into a tragic moral dilemma.
